My Philosophy of Teaching Statement:
Values of Teaching:
As a teacher, I will positively impact future generations by instilling a love for each other and a love for learning in my students. I will not only teach my students academics, but also teach them ways that they can make a difference in the community through service learning. I believe that every day will be a different day in which the students can work towards a common goal in my classroom. I will value respect, honesty, integrity, and hard work. I will also utilize other teachers and my students for opinions and advice to better myself. My main goal as a teacher is to reach every single one of my students in some way. My students and my career will be my priority. I understand that in my classroom, I am more than just a teacher, I will have to sometimes play the role of a cheerleader, mom, doctor, and so much more. I will pour my whole heart and soul into teaching, but most importantly, I will teach unconditionally.
Relationship with Students:
As a teacher, I believe that the most important aspect of my career is to create a personable relationship with each of my students to let them know that they can count on me and that I can count on them. This will create trust. I will create a positive relationship with each of my students by calling my students by name and connecting with them individually on the very first day of school. I will have no preconceived judgments of any of my students prior to teaching them. I will also take time to ensure that all of my students are connecting with all the other students in my classroom to help create a learning community. My classroom will be family-oriented. This will allow my students to open up to one another, which will create deeper learning in my classroom. I will create a classroom that respects and invests in each other by encouraging everyone to participate in group discussions and activities. There will be mutual respect in my classroom; I expect that my students will respect me just as I respect them. I promise to be true to my students in everything I say and do. I understand that some of my students may not have the best home life, or may be struggling outside of school, so I want my students to know that I am willing to be there for them emotionally and mentally. I will do anything I can to be there for them. I not only believe that it is crucial to connect with each of my students personally, but also to create a respectable parent communication system early on, as we are both here to support their child in any way that we possible can, and to push their child to his or her full potential.
Classroom Environment:
As a teacher, I believe that creating a safe and comfortable classroom environment for my students is vital so that my students can learn as much as possible. It is incredibly hard to learn when you do not feel safe or comfortable because other things are on your mind. I will create this classroom environment by being organized and well-prepared for all of the lessons that I teach. I will decorate my classroom in a colorful or themed way, but in a way that is not too overwhelming for my students. My classroom will be a place of high energy and enthusiasm. I believe that consistency and repetition is key for young learners. I will build respect in my classroom so that students will not be afraid to speak up or ask a question. In my classroom, students who ask a lot of questions will be praised, instead of looked down upon. It is crucial for them to understand that no question is a stupid question. Questions are necessary for learning. I believe that the students should have some freedom of choice. I will implement this freedom of choice into my classroom by letting them create classroom rules. My job as a teacher is to enforce the rules that have been previously set by my students. I will use positive reinforcement for the students who follow these rules by acknowledging their good choices. When a student needs to reconsider their choices, I will not call them out in front of the whole class, instead, I will talk to them privately after class. I do not ever want my students to feel unsafe or uncomfortable in my classroom, and I will do everything that I possibly can to prevent that from happening.
Motivation & Personal Growth:
As a teacher, I will motivate my students and encourage personal growth by pushing each and every one of my students to their full potential. In order to do this, I will set high expectations and goals for each of my students individually. I will help my students grow academically and personally by making sure that I make my lessons relatable to the world around them and relatable to their interests. In my classroom, I will encourage my students to become more knowledgeable about not only themselves, but also the world around them. My students will take responsibility for their learning. I will use mastery learning and have a growth mindset. Instead of looking down upon a particular student for not understanding the material and saying that they failed the assignment or test, we will look at it in a positive way by saying “not yet.” My students will be praised for progress, no matter how small it may be. I will embrace mistakes and failures, as I understand that they are necessary for learning. Instead of directly pointing my students to the correct answers, I will encourage them to practice their critical thinking and problem solving skills. I will provide meaningful feedback for each assignment and assessment. I will also ask my students to give me feedback so that I can ensure that I am using engaging and effective teaching methods. This will push me and my students to be the absolute best that we can be.
Diversity:
As a teacher, I will respect and accept my students for who they truly are by embracing each student’s uniqueness. Together as a class, we will celebrate and respect each student’s differences, realizing that nobody is completely like another person. As a class, students will participate in class discussions and activities that help students share about their own personal identity. I can ensure respect and acceptance of my students as a teacher by being aware of each student’s identity, culture, and ethnicity. I will understand my own bias as a teacher so that I do not let them effect my teaching or offend my students. Everyone in my classroom will be treated equally regardless of their gender, race, or ethnicity. Most importantly, I will teach equitable.
